Shunevich in NKVD uniform: Colleagues performed feats in this uniform

Interior minister Ihar Shunevich explains his choice of the uniform for the May 9 parade in Minsk.

He said it to tut.by on Wednesday when answering questions from journalists in the House of Representatives.

“I wouldn’t like to give detailed comments on the situation. I think it's obvious. It is a special day. My colleagues performed feats and died in this uniform. It is a sign of respect for them,” the interior minister said.

Ihar Shunevich wore the uniform of the Soviet NKVD, the people's commissariat for internal affairs, at the parade in Minsk on May 9. The uniform consisting of a dark-blue shirt with a stiff collar, shoulder-belt, riding breeches with turquoise stripes tucked into boots and a blue peaked cap with a turquoise band was designed for NKVD officers in 1943.
