On the night of September 28, a powerful explosion occurred near the airport in the capital of Uzbekistan Tashkent. Local and Russian Telegram channels are reporting deaths and injuries.

Local authorities say that the explosion and fire occurred at 02:43 at one of the customs warehouses located on the territory of the "Stroitel" massif in Sergeli district of Tashkent, liga.net reports.

After the explosion, almost nothing was left of the customs terminal building at the Tashkent airport. The preliminary cause of the explosion could have been batteries for electric cars stored in the customs warehouse.

According to the Brief channel, with reference to eyewitness testimony, there are many victims at the site of the explosion. Houses and facilities near the epicentre were damaged by the blast wave. Authorities do not rule out the possibility of a terrorist attack.

Numerous houses in the 30-kilometre blast zone were damaged, authorities said.

The Uzbek Interior Ministry said the powerful explosion in Tashkent was allegedly "caused by a lightning strike". According to the ministry, the explosion almost completely destroyed a warehouse.

At about 05:00 local time, according to rescuers, the fire was extinguished.

According to the BAZA channel, it is currently known about at least one dead teenager. The 17-year-old was sleeping by the window and a piece of shrapnel hit him in the neck, the resource claims.

It is also known about at least five injured children - they were hit by shrapnel. Now they are in hospitals.
