The US president left them at 10 per cent for dozens of countries for 90 days.
US President Donald Trump has explained the pause in the conduct of duties to 50% by the excessive concern of citizens, reports The New York Times.
‘I thought people started to get out of line. They became overly panicked. They started to get a little bit scared,’ the president said. Trump also called the market situation ‘pretty grim’ following his decision to impose duties.
Asked about his statement that the imposition of duties would not be delayed, the US president said: ‘You need to have flexibility. I could say - here's a wall and I'm going to go through that wall, I'm going to go through it no matter what. However, you can't go through the wall. Sometimes you need to be able to go under the wall, around the wall or over the wall.’
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, speaking to the American Bankers Association, called China the ‘biggest offender’ in history.
