If the sides fail to reach an agreement on the nuclear programme.
US President Donald Trump has said that Israel could lead a potential military operation against Iran if the sides fail to reach an agreement on its nuclear programme.
This is reported by The Times of Israel.
The American leader, in response to a question from reporters in the Oval Office about the possibility of using military means against Iran if Tehran does not agree to the nuclear deal, assured that ‘if we need military means to do that, we will have them.’
‘Israel is obviously going to be very involved in this - it's going to be a leader,’ the White House chief said.
Thus Trump, perhaps for the first time, openly threatened with a strike against Iran by Israel, let alone a strike led by the Jewish state.
Trump also added that ‘nobody is bossing us - we do what we want to do’.
He also said that the US would ‘certainly’ use military force against Iran if necessary, and that he has some sort of timetable for how long that would take. Trump is reportedly giving the process two months.
The US president revealed that a summit planned for Saturday in Oman is the ‘beginning’ of the process. His Middle East envoy Steve Whitkoff will represent the US, while Iran will be represented by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
Trump said the talks will be direct, while Iran has said they will go through a mediator.
‘We have some time, but we don't have that much, because we're not going to let them have nuclear weapons. We're going to let them prosper. I want them to prosper. I want Iran to be great. The one thing they can't have is nuclear weapons. They understand that,’ the US president emphasised.
