Washington has softened its demands.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Bloomberg that the U.S. and Ukraine are getting closer to signing a minerals agreement, which could happen this week.
Bloomberg reports this, citing Bessent's comment.
“When asked about the status of the talks on Monday, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Ukraine made a counteroffer over the weekend and the talks are still ongoing. We are very, very close,” Bessent told Bloomberg News in Buenos Aires.
“The agreement could be signed this week,” he said.
The publication notes that the Ukrainian government declined to comment before the agreement was signed. The White House and the U.S. Treasury Department did not respond to a request for comment.
At the same time, according to a Treasury Department spokesman, the technical talks were very productive, adding that they look forward to the talks being concluded as soon as possible.
The publication also says that the U.S. has softened its demands for the return of aid from Ukraine during the negotiations on the subsoil agreement.
