One shooter is in custody, the other one was killed.
At least five people were killed and four injured in the shooting at the University of Florida, local TV channel WFTV9 reports, citing law enforcement sources.
According to it, there were two shooters, one was killed and the other one was detained. A spokesman for the Tallahassee Police Department confirmed to NBC News that one of the attackers had been detained.
Six people were taken to the hospital, a Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare spokesman told the network. Five of them are in serious condition, one is in critical condition.
The shooting was responded to by state Governor Ron Desantis, who said he was praying for the victims. He said law enforcement agencies in the state are taking necessary action. ‘It's a disgrace. Horrible,’ US President Donald Trump also said. According to him, ‘it's terrible that things like this happen’.
The university cancelled classes for the coming days.
Students were escorted out of the building by security guards and law enforcement officers, for example Joshua Sirmans said he was in the university's main library when, according to him, an alarm went off warning of gunfire, the Associated Press reported. The student said he was led out by law enforcement. Other students were hiding on the lower floors of the building at the time of the shooting, Ryan Cedergren told the agency. ‘At that point, it was a matter of just surviving,’ Cedergren said. Later, police officers moved them out as well.
The University of Florida opened in 1851. It has more than 44,000 students and about 16,000 teachers, faculty employees and workers.
