Kyiv demands clear guarantees.
A comprehensive ceasefire was one of the central topics of the negotiations between Ukraine and the US in Paris. During the talks, Kyiv made it clear that an agreement was only possible if there were real security guarantees. The Wall Street Journal writes about this.
The publication recalled that on April 17, US representatives held talks with the Ukrainian delegation and representatives of European countries in Paris. Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Yermak called the discussion “very meaningful,” emphasizing that Kyiv expects clear guarantees from international partners, in particular regarding the prevention of repeated aggression by Russia after the establishment of a ceasefire.
At the same time, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that the Ukrainian side raised the issue of security guarantees, but refrained from disclosing details.
“During the talks, Ukrainian representatives reminded the Americans of the previously voiced position in Saudi Arabia: Kyiv will agree to a ceasefire if Russia agrees to it. However, Moscow traditionally puts forward unacceptable conditions aimed at weakening Ukraine's defense capability — in particular, the cessation of military aid, mobilization and training of the military,” the report says.
In addition, one of the Western officials told the publication that the United States presented a draft concept for monitoring compliance with the ceasefire if an agreement is reached. However, the details have not yet been disclosed.
