‘Give Belarusians Opportunity To Return Home!’

A Belarusian woman harshly responded to Lukashenka's plans to bring Pakistani workers to Belarus.

A letter from a reader from a small town was sent to the editorial office of Charter97.org. The woman resolutely opposed Lukashenka's proposal to populate Belarus with Pakistanis:

— I live in a regional center, where in a small town everyone knows each other. Communication is the only form of recreation available to us. Every time I talk to friends, it's like reading a new book.

And today I met a former colleague, and she, sad and tired, began to tell her story:

— My sister had a stroke. She is bedridden, she can't take care of herself, so I have to take care of her every two weeks, taking turns with my brother. And I have a bunch of ailments myself.

— Marusya, she has two sons, can't they look after their mother?

— Yes, you're right. Only after 2020 they were forced to leave.

That's how fate works. I'm sitting at home, hurt by this news, and going over my friends in my head. And I can't find anyone whose family hasn't been touched by the misfortune of forced emigration. Even in our four-apartment house, children in three families have gone abroad. Not by their own free will, of course.

And yesterday I read the news that there is a labor shortage in Belarus, and they are planning to attract 150 thousand Pakistanis to work. One hundred and fifty thousand! That's 11 towns like ours! My God, we even had one Chechen settle here. A hard-working guy, he set up greenhouses and grew vegetables. But people looked askance at him, at first they didn't even want to buy anything from him, until they got used to the situation.

We don't need Pakistanis, Chinese, or Koreans! Give the Belarusians an opportunity to return home! And they will return with European experience and money. They will open their businesses, initiatives and rebuild our home again. There will be workers and jobs. There is only one condition for return — Lukashenka must go! Because people need a guarantee of freedom. Because only freedom can give faith in tomorrow.
