Russian Ambassador Nechayev Booed At Memorial Event In Germany

He had been warned the day before.

The Russian Ambassador, despite warnings from the German side, nevertheless came uninvited to the celebrations in the city of Torgau, held on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the memorable handshake between the soldiers of the USSR and the USA on the Elbe River on April 25, 1945.

This ended in trouble for the Kremlin representative: those gathered booed him, reminding him of the invasion of the Russian Armed Forces into the territory of Ukraine, the German publication MDR reports.

Incidentally, journalists covering the event reported that people booed Nechayev several times. The press asked the Russian diplomat what he thought about the fact that he was clearly not welcome here. “I don’t feel it, I’m comfortable,” Nechayev answered, trying to put a good face on a bad game. In turn, the Prime Minister of Saxony (a federal state within Germany) Michael Kretschmer addressed the Russian ambassador, recalling the full-scale war against Ukraine, which Putin started more than three years ago, as well as the annexation of the Crimea and the war in the Donbas in 2014.

"It was Russia that started the war against Ukraine in violation of international law. Not in 2022, but back in 2014. And only Russia must stop this war," the German politician emphasized.

In addition, Kretschmer, having acknowledged the very large losses of the USSR army during World War II, recalled that the victory on the eastern fronts belonged not only to the Russians.

"There were not only Russians there, but also Ukrainians, Georgians, Belarusians, Kazakhs. It would be much more appropriate if representatives of Ukraine or Georgia were present with us at the memorial event now," he emphasized.
