Ukraine Receives First Coal From The US After Stopping Production In Pokrovsk

Kyiv has stopped operations in Pokrovsk due to active hostilities.

Ukrainian company Metinvest, the largest steel producer, has received its first batch of coking coal from the US after stopping its production in Pokrovsk (Krasnoarmeysk) in the Donbas, Bloomberg reports, citing a statement by CEO Yuriy Ryzhenkov.

Metinvest received 80 thousand tons of coal from its subsidiary United Coal Company LLC, which it bought in 2009. Previously, the company mined coal used in blast furnaces at steel plants in the Pokrovsk area. Since December, it has stopped operations there due to active hostilities.

“We have mobilized our resources to ensure the operation of the industry. Although importing coking coal is more expensive than its domestic equivalent due to logistics, this is an important step towards helping the Ukrainian economy,” Ryzhenkov noted.

Deliveries of 80,000 tons per month are planned to continue to ensure the operation of the Zaporizhstal and Kamet Stal plants (in Kamenske, Dnipropetrovsk region). Bloomberg notes that before the war, steel accounted for about 20% of Ukrainian exports. Last year, steel production in Ukraine fell to 6.2 million tons from more than 21 million tons before the war.
