Latvia Plans To Introduce Another Restriction For Belarusians

The ban concerns real estate.

The bill on “restricting transactions that threaten national security,” prepared for the second reading in the Latvian Saeima, suggests a complete ban on the acquisition of real estate in the country for all citizens of Belarus and Russia, said Lauma Paeglkalna, a representative of the Ministry of Justice, in the “Open Conversation” program on Latvian Radio 4, the portal of Latvian public media reports.

The purpose of the bill, the publication notes, is to prevent uncontrolled influence on the Latvian economy, which could result from the concentration of citizens of countries and their capital in Latvia, “using the capital of these countries and their citizens against Latvian interests.”

Those who already own real estate will not have their property taken away, and will also have the opportunity to inherit real estate, Paeglkalna clarified.
