Which ministries will the CDU/CSU get and which will the SPD get?
Leader of the Christian Democratic and Christian Social Union bloc Friedrich Merz announced the formation of a coalition with the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), which is scheduled to begin work in early May.
The CDU/CSU presented the coalition agreement with the SPD at a joint press conference. The party leaders spoke about the government's plans for the next four years and the distribution of the main ministries.
Thus, the CDU/CSU will receive the Federal Chancellery, the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy, the Ministry of Family Affairs, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Space, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, and the Ministry of Digital Transformation and Modernization. The SPD will receive the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Economic Development, the Ministry of the Environment, the Ministry of Housing and Construction, and the Ministry of Labor and Social Security.
The new government's plans include cutting corporate taxes by 2028, reforming the social security system, tightening migration policy, and increasing defense spending.
The SPD members will now have to vote on the coalition agreement, while the CDU and CSU must receive approval from the party leadership. The SPD vote is expected to take at least 10 days. The new parliament is expected to confirm Friedrich Merz as chancellor on May 7.
