That position may now be filled by Steve Whitkoff.

U.S. President Donald Trump's national security adviser Mike Waltz and his deputy Alex Wong will leave their posts, sources tell CBS and Politico. Fox News cited sources as saying they have already resigned.

The adviser position could go to Steve Whitkoff, sources told Politico reporter Mark Halperin. Whitkoff's candidacy is supported by many senior officials, they said. Whitkoff now serves as the president's special envoy for the Middle East. Contenders for the post of adviser have been discussed in the White House for several weeks, according to Politico.

In March, Waltz found himself at the center of a scandal. He organized a group chat on the messenger Signal for top White House officials. They were discussing strikes against the Houthis in Yemen. Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg was also accidentally added there, and published screenshots of the correspondence. Waltz, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and other officials were accused of revealing classified information; they denied the charges. Waltz claimed responsibility for what happened.
