This was stated by the President of Mexico.
Mexican authorities have filed a lawsuit against Google for changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America in the Google Maps service for users in the U.S.
It was announced by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum
-"The lawsuit has already been filed," Sheinbaum said.
At the same time, she did not specify when exactly the lawsuit was filed and which court would hear the case.
Renaming the Gulf of Mexico
Remember, almost immediately after Donald Trump officially became president of the United States, he renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the American Gulf.
Later, Google announced that the Gulf of Mexico would be displayed as the American Gulf on U.S. territories.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum says Google's decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the American Gulf on Google Maps is wrong.
Sheinbaum submitted a letter addressed to Google in which her government argues that the U.S. cannot unilaterally change the name of the Gulf of Mexico, which it shares with Cuba and Mexico.
Mexico argues that the U.S. cannot legally change the name of the gulf because, under the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea, an individual country's sovereign territory extends only up to 12 nautical miles (about 22 kilometers) from the coastline.
