Brazilian President: Hey, Comrade Putin, Go To Istanbul

An ally of the Kremlin chief is begging him to come for talks.

Brazilian President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva has said he will "try to talk" to Vladimir Putin to convince him to come in person for talks with Vladimir Zelensky in Istanbul on May 15. This was reported by the newspaper Ouest-France, quoting the Brazilian leader at a press conference in Beijing.

"I will try to talk to Putin. It costs me nothing to tell him, 'Hey, Comrade Putin, go to Istanbul and negotiate, for God's sake,'" he added.

Earlier, China and Brazil issued, a joint statement welcoming Russian President Vladimir Putin's "proposal to start peace talks" with Ukraine. According to the official Xinhua news agency, in the text of the document, the two countries also described direct dialog as "the only way to end the conflict."
