The Condition Of Rivers In Polesie Is Critical

  • 15.05.2025, 17:40

Water levels are already reaching the mark limiting navigation.

Not only are the bogs drying up in Polessie, as "Flagstaff" reported, but also the rivers are shoaling rapidly. According to the hydrological bulletin of Belgidromet of May 15, last days, the country's rivers have experienced a decline in water levels. As a result, the water level on the Sozh near Slavgorod fell below the mark, limiting navigation, while on the Dnieper near Zhlobin reached it.

This is an extraordinary situation. Previously, according to the schedules of long-term observations, in April - mid-May, on the contrary, the water level in the rivers, including the Dnieper, was the highest after the spring floods.

Then, due to the hot dry season, the water level dropped to the level critical for navigation by the end of summer - beginning of autumn.

Now the summer has not yet begun, but unfavorable conditions for the operation of river transport are already observed - ahead of the "schedule" by about three months. It turns out that if the trend continues, then by the end of summer the rivers will be shallow.

In the coming days, Gomel region is forecasted to experience prolonged precipitation. However, taking into account the previous drought, it is unlikely that the rains will significantly increase the water level in the rivers and significantly affect the situation.

As of May 15, the decline in water levels with an intensity of 1-8 cm per day is observed on the Dnieper, Berezina, Sozh, Pripyat. On the Dnieper near the cities of Mogilev and Zhlobin, Berezina near the cities of Bobruisk and Svetlogorsk, Sozh near the city of Slavgorod unfavorable conditions for the operation of river transport are observed. By the end of this week, the water level on the Sozh near the city of Krichev will reach the level limiting navigation, according to the information of hydrologists.

The report of Gomelobhydromet additionally informs that on the Berezina near Svetlogorsk the water level is below the level that disrupts the work of river transport, and in some parts of the rivers there is development of vegetation near the banks.
