The Russian foreign minister said that the Kremlin was seeking to completely take over Ukraine.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said that Russia cannot allow the rights of Russian-speaking citizens to be "infringed" on the territory of Ukraine, including after a possible cessation of hostilities.

He said this during a speech at the conference "Historical South Russian Lands. National Identity and Self-Determination of Peoples" on May 23, he was quoted by the Russian media.

"On the territory of Ukraine, which is beyond the constitutional borders of the Russian Federation, millions of people speak Russian, it is their native language. And to leave them under the leadership of the junta, which has banned even speaking Russian (only thinking has not been banned yet), would be a very big crime," he asserted.

He assured that Russia would "definitely not allow this to happen" and would "protect Russian-speaking citizens".
