The action comes hours after Pakistan tested a new ballistic missile.
India has cut off the flow of water to Pakistan from a dam on the Chinab River and is also preparing for similar action on the Jhelam River. The measures have been taken amid another strain in relations following Pakistan's ballistic missile test. This was reported by Hindustan Times.
After a week of discussions and hydrological tests, India launched an operation to remove silt from Baglihar dam on the Chinab river and lowered sluice gates, reducing the flow to Pakistan by 90%.
Analogous operations are planned for the Kishanganga dam on the Jhelam river.
It notes that India began operations within hours of Pakistan's test of a surface-to-surface ballistic missile on May 3.
New Delhi announced a series of restrictive measures for Pakistan, including the suspension of a 1960 water-sharing agreement, following the April 22 terrorist attack in disputed Kashmir that killed 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali. Dozens more were injured.
The agreement regulated the allocation of water from rivers flowing from Kashmir, allowing Pakistan access to its main source of water supply, the Indus River, as well as the Jhelam and Chinab rivers.
On April 24, India closed the locks on a dam and cut off the flow of Indus River water.
