The agreement names Ukraine as a key factor of European security and stability.
On Monday, May 5, the leaders of the conservative CDU/CSU bloc and the Social Democratic Party of Germany signed a coalition agreement. Parliament will hold elections for chancellor on Tuesday.
This is the fifth black-red coalition in German history. Party leaders signed a 144-page coalition agreement in Berlin called "Responsibility for Germany." As journalists note, the first test for the alliance will be Tuesday's election of CDU leader Friedrich Merz as the tenth federal chancellor.
Merz needs the votes of a majority of all Bundestag members to be elected chancellor. That's 316 votes. The Bundestag consists of 328 politicians from the CDU/CSU and SPD. Despite the small margin, Merz's election in the first round of voting is considered fairly certain.
Before signing the agreement, Merz said the coalition wants to move Germany forward with reforms and investments.
"I am very confident that we will be able to run our country powerfully, smoothly and reliably, starting tomorrow," Merz said. His team is determined to "implement exactly this plan now and make a purposeful difference in Germany."
As Der Spiegel writes, the agreement names Ukraine as a key factor in European security and stability. The coalition promises to support Ukraine from a position of strength, we are talking about military, political, economic and civilian support.
In particular, Germany plans to remain one of Ukraine's key partners in post-war reconstruction. In this context, attention is emphasized on finding mechanisms for the full confiscation of frozen Russian assets.
Germany also reaffirms its commitment to the prospect of Ukraine's membership in NATO and calls for Ukraine, Moldova and the Western Balkan countries to be admitted to the EU.
